Program
DAY 1 : ARRIVAL VALETTA – MALTA (D)
Today you will arrive in the largest city in Malta, Valetta. After arrival, you will be transferred from the airport to your hotel. After check-in at your hotel, you will be expected in one of the most beautiful rooftop bars in the city with a view of Valetta Cathedral or Manoel fort. After this you are expected for dinner in a wine restaurant.
Overnight.
DAY 2 : WINE TASTING, MDINA AND DINGLI CLIFFS (B)
After breakfast, set off and receive exclusive access to a small winery with a vineyard of approximately 4 hectares located 200 meters above sea level. This winery is usually not open to the public allowing you to enjoy an intimate and exclusive setting away from the mass tourism near the traditional village of Siggiewi. The winery is surrounded by ancient olive trees and beautiful landscaping.
This winery is located on the southern flank of the estate in a typical Maltese farm. It offers a fantastic view of the vineyard with the medieval town of Mdina as a backdrop. This town used to be the summer residence of a number of art grandmasters and other celebrities. The setting is ideal for enjoying a delicious wine tasting.
Then you visit the old historic Mdina, the old capital, also known as the silent city. Here you can enjoy a tour of the Mdina Cathedral and through the typical cobbled streets towards the bastions. The bastions offer a beautiful view over large parts of the island. After this you will visit the historical catacombs of St. Paul in Rabat. Underground churches and catacombs are believed to be found all over Malta. Again, and again an impressive phenomenon. At the end of the visit to Mdina there is plenty of time to enjoy a great restaurant where you can have lunch.
After the visit to Medina you drive towards the Dingli cliffs on the west coast of Malta which are certainly not lacking. These impressive cliffs, some up to over 200 meters in height, offer majestic views of the surrounding area and the Mediterranean Sea. They are a natural barrier due to their imposing height and impressive visibility.
After the Dingli cliffs, it is time to visit the second winery today, where part of the vines were planted in 1985 and another in 1994. The traditional looking winery is built from characteristic Maltese chalk coloured limestone. It is located just below the old walled city of Mdina. The local climate and geographic factors provide the ideal conditions for this winery to make brilliantly coloured wines with pure aromas and lively acids.
The estate consists of 47 acres of land with all 91,000 vines served with a separate drip irrigation. You will also see the wine cellar with independently conditioned tanks, underground cellars with French oak barrels, the bottling hall, tasting room and cellar shop.
The winery’s current portfolio includes ten labels with four white wines, five red wines and a rosé wine with an annual production of up to 140,000 bottles.
At the end of the afternoon you will travel back to your hotel and have the evening free to enjoy in Valetta.
Overnight.
DAY 3 : WINE TASTING AND MARSAXLOKK (B)
After breakfast, today you will visit one of the other highlights of Malta, the town of Marsaxlokk including its fishing harbour and its surroundings. Marsaxlokk is one of the most picturesque fishing villages in the Maltese Islands. In Marsaxlokk you will have the opportunity to stroll along the coast and the market. You witness the life of the fishermen and villagers. You admire the beautiful traditional Maltese fishing boats, the brightly coloured “Luzzu”.
After this, you will travel to a family-run winery that became an important part of Malta’s winemaking history. The winery is located near the quaint village of Marsaxlokk and extends over 20 hectares. It has about 50,000 vines consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wines produced here guarantee the highest quality and depth of character. Wines are made here with a blend of all three grape varieties grown on the estate. The unfiltered wine is aged for at least 12 months in oak barrels.
Your tour begins with a walk through the 400-year-old wine cellar, originally built in the 17th century by the Knights of St. John. These wine cellars reflect the dedication and passion of four generations of winemakers – a blend of tradition and expertise that has evolved over 100 years. More than 100,000 bottles and 220 oak barrels are aged in these wine cellars.
After lunch in a village on the way, visit two other highlights of Malta, the megalithic temple complex Hagar Qim and the beautiful Blue Grotto Cave. Hagar Qim dates from the Ggantija phase (3600-3200 BCE). In 1992, UNESCO recognized Hagar Qim as a World Heritage Site. The Blue Cave is located in Wied iz-Zurrieq, a small rocky cove. The seabed is the main attraction of this deep-sea cave, which transmits an intense blue colour upwards with the reflection of sunlight. Numerous small fishing boats are moored in the water and take visitors to the Blue Cave.
At the end of the afternoon you will be transferred back to your hotel and you will have the evening free in Valetta.
Overnight.
